Why AI Ethics, AI & Data Literacy, and the EU AI Act must work together for Responsible AI<\/b><\/h1>\n

Artificial Intelligence<\/b> is no longer a distant technological concept. It is already embedded in our daily lives, helping us in filling common tasks such as <\/span>writing emails<\/b> to more advanced processes such as <\/span>screening job applicants, detecting fraud, promoting products<\/b>, and even <\/span>assisting medical professionals in diagnosis<\/b>. However, as AI becomes further integrated into our social and professional systems, an important question emerges upon which we must consciously reflect:<\/span><\/p>\n

How do we ensure that AI is used responsibly?<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n

Frankly, there is no single answer or simple solution to this question. <\/span>Responsible AI <\/b>naturally asks us to combine <\/span>AI literacy, data literacy, ethical awareness, and regulatory frameworks such as the EU AI Act<\/b>. Amidst this rapid AI integration, these elements must work together to ensure AI systems will continue to <\/span>support<\/span><\/i> en <\/span>aid<\/span><\/i> our society rather than <\/span>harm<\/span><\/i> it.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this article, I will share key insights from our recent webinar at<\/span> Amsterdam Data Academy<\/span><\/i> on how organizations and individuals can move toward <\/span>responsible AI adoption <\/b>en <\/span>ethically<\/span><\/i> utilise AI tools to improve efficiency, organisation and simplify complex tasks, all while furthering their unique quality of work.<\/span><\/p>\n

AI Literacy is more than just using ChatGPT<\/b><\/h3>\n

When people first hear the term <\/span>AI-geletterdheid<\/b>, many immediately think about tools like ChatGPT, assuming this phrase simply refers to knowing how to effectively prompt AI.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, <\/span>AI literacy is much deeper than that<\/span><\/i>. <\/b>True AI literacy includes forming a fundamental understanding of the basics behind how AI models function, delving into technicalities such as the difference between <\/span>automation<\/b> en<\/span> learning systems<\/b> as well as the way in which AI systems learn<\/span> patterns <\/b>vanaf<\/span> historical data<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, a critical component of learning about AI literacy is being able to <\/span>actively evaluate<\/span><\/i> these models and their use, understanding the risks of <\/span>bias, hallucinations <\/b>en<\/span> incorrect inputs<\/b>, generally identifying the <\/span>limitations<\/b> of these AI models.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many people assume AI simply automates tasks. Quite the contrary, AI systems are fundamentally different: they <\/span>learn<\/span><\/i> vanaf<\/span> past data <\/b>naar<\/span> predict<\/span><\/i> future outcomes<\/b>. Once we understand this principle, it becomes easier to explain phenomena such as bias or hallucinations.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, if an AI system is trained on biased or incomplete data, the output will also be biased. This is why the famous principle \u201c<\/span>Garbage In, Garbage Out<\/span><\/i>\u201d still applies strongly in AI systems.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is why <\/span>AI-geletterdheid <\/b>must be <\/span>built <\/span><\/i>on top of <\/span>data literacy<\/b>: Before people can responsibly use AI, they must first be able to answer the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n
