It is already embedded in our daily lives, helping us in filling common tasks such as <\/span><b>writing emails<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to more advanced processes such as <\/span><b>screening job applicants, detecting fraud, promoting products<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and even <\/span><b>assisting medical professionals in diagnosis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, as AI becomes further integrated into our social and professional systems, an important question emerges upon which we must consciously reflect:<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b><i>How do we ensure that AI is used responsibly?<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frankly, there is no single answer or simple solution to this question. <\/span><b>Responsible AI <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naturally asks us to combine <\/span><b>AI literacy, data literacy, ethical awareness, and regulatory frameworks such as the EU AI Act<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Amidst this rapid AI integration, these elements must work together to ensure AI systems will continue to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">support<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> en <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aid<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> our society rather than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harm<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, I will share key insights from our recent webinar at<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Amsterdam Data Academy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on how organizations and individuals can move toward <\/span><b>responsible AI adoption <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">en <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ethically<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> utilise AI tools to improve efficiency, organisation and simplify complex tasks, all while furthering their unique quality of work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>AI Literacy is more than just using ChatGPT<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When people first hear the term <\/span><b>AI-geletterdheid<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, many immediately think about tools like ChatGPT, assuming this phrase simply refers to knowing how to effectively prompt AI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI literacy is much deeper than that<\/span><\/i><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">True AI literacy includes forming a fundamental understanding of the basics behind how AI models function, delving into technicalities such as the difference between <\/span><b>automation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> en<\/span><b> learning systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as the way in which AI systems learn<\/span><b> patterns <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vanaf<\/span><b> historical data<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, a critical component of learning about AI literacy is being able to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actively evaluate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> these models and their use, understanding the risks of <\/span><b>bias, hallucinations <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">en<\/span><b> incorrect inputs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, generally identifying the <\/span><b>limitations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of these AI models.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people assume AI simply automates tasks. Quite the contrary, AI systems are fundamentally different: they <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learn<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vanaf<\/span><b> past data <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naar<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">predict<\/span><\/i> <b>future outcomes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Once we understand this principle, it becomes easier to explain phenomena such as bias or hallucinations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if an AI system is trained on biased or incomplete data, the output will also be biased. This is why the famous principle \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garbage In, Garbage Out<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d still applies strongly in AI systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why <\/span><b>AI-geletterdheid <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">must be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">built <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on top of <\/span><b>data literacy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Before people can responsibly use AI, they must first be able to answer the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does high-quality data look like?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does fair representation in data mean?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do we identify bias in datasets?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does outdated or incomplete data lead to unreliable predictions?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI literacy is built on data literacy; therefore, without it, AI literacy remains <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unclear<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> en <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incomplete<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The EU AI Act: A Risk-based Approach to AI<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To address the growing social, societal, and technological impact of AI systems, the European Union introduced the <\/span><b>EU AI-wet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which builds on the foundation of earlier regulations such as <\/span><b>GDPR<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This AI Act introduces a <\/span><b>risk-based regulatory framework<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, categorizing AI systems based on their potential risk and general impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main categories include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h5><b>Unacceptable Risk<\/b><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These systems are <\/span><b>completely banned<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for their unethical human simulation amongst other negative social impacts. Examples include social scoring systems as well as certain forms of emotion recognition used for manipulation or surveillance.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h5><b>High Risk<\/b><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These systems are allowed but <\/span><b>strictly regulated<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to avoid negative societal consequences across professional fields such as education and even the medical field as multiple AI systems are currently used in candidate recruitment, informative and engaging educational systems, medical diagnosis, and other critical societal infrastructures.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h5><b>Limited Risk<\/b><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These systems require <\/span><b>transparency obligations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning users must be informed that AI is being used to avoid raising ethical concerns surrounding users\u2019 right to informed consent. Examples include AI chatbots and AI-powered customer service systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h5><b>Minimal Risk<\/b><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These systems require<\/span><b> little to no regulation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as they do not pose any direct ethical threats to us. This includes common spam filters and casual AI use in media such as advertisements and video games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An extremely important and common misconception about the EU AI Act is that its rules only apply to companies located in Europe. This is <\/span><b><i>completely false<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Any company placing AI systems on the European market must comply with these new regulations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, regardless of the company\u2019s location, whether the corporation is based in Europe, the US, Asia, or the Middle East.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Act is being gradually implemented through a phased timeline. The first major milestone came into effect in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">February 2025<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is the ban on <\/span><b>unacceptable-risk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> AI systems. <\/span><b>High-risk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> AI system regulations are planned to be put into effect as of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">August 2026<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in addition to other rules regarding AI literacy obligation, meaning companies deploying or developing these systems must ensure their employees have received adequate <\/span><b>AI literacy training<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by that date. Other obligations, such as those covering general-purpose AI models, follow their own separate timelines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To summarise, AI literacy will no longer be optional by<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this summer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it will become a <\/span><b>legal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> obligation, one that all companies must abide by.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1040\" data-end=\"1256\"><strong data-start=\"1040\" data-end=\"1256\">To help professionals and organizations prepare for these new obligations, Amsterdam Data Academy offers an <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/amsterdamdataacademy.com\/nl\/product\/ai-geletterdheid\/\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1150\" data-end=\"1185\">AI Literacy &amp; Ethics course<\/a> focused on responsible AI use, governance, and EU AI Act compliance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><b>AI Governance: Moving beyond \u201ctick-the-box\u201d compliance<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many organizations interpret the aforementioned AI literacy requirements as a simple training exercise:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLet\u2019s send all employees to any course to get this over with and consider ourselves legally compliant.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <\/span><b>responsible AI <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">requires <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than a single training session. This is where <\/span><b>AI governance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> becomes essential, a term that refers to the rules, policies, processes, and responsibilities<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that guide how<\/span><b> AI systems <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are<\/span><b> developed, deployed, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">en<\/span><b> monitored<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within an organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key governance components include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fairness &amp; Ethics<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Transparency &amp; Accountability<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Data Privacy<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Risk Monitoring<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Redress mechanisms<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, organizations must not only deploy AI systems, but also define <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is responsible for <\/span><b>monitoring<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> en <\/span><b>managing the risks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> throughout the entire<\/span><b> AI lifecycle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The challenge: Regulation vs Innovation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, one of the biggest challenges in AI regulation is <\/span><b>speed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Legislation is inherently <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slow<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while AI innovation is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">faster than ever<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. New AI developments and innovations appear almost <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every week<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sometimes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even daily<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Meanwhile, <\/span><b>laws<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may take <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">years<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to develop and implement internationally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This creates a difficult balance: If regulation is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">too slow<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it becomes obsolete while if regulation is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">too strict<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, companies may simply avoid regulated markets altogether. We have already seen this happen with <\/span><b>GDPR<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Some companies decided not to enter the European market as they considered their compliance would be too complex or costly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why regulators must find the <\/span><b>\u201cregulatory sweet spot\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A framework that protects society while still encouraging innovation, also applying within organizations. <\/span><b>Internal AI governance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be <\/span><b>flexible, regularly reviewed, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">en<\/span><b> responsive to change<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to keep up with modern AI ethical and technological developments alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>Keeping Humans in the Loop<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another important principle in responsible AI is <\/span><b>Human-in-the-Loop (HITL)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. AI systems should not operate <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entirely<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without human oversight, especially when decisions affect people\u2019s lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A useful distinction here is between two modes of AI use:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h5><b>Generative AI<\/b><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This essential term refers to the use of AI that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creates<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> full outputs for you, for example asking ChatGPT to write an entire report.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h5><b>Assistive AI<\/b><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrary to generative AI, this term refers to the use of AI to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">support<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> human thinking rather than replace it, for instance asking AI to help you <\/span><b>brainstorm ideas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>improve <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>clarity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a text you wrote, or i<\/span><b>dentify mistakes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in other documents and such.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Assistive AI<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> keeps human thinking <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">active<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while purely<\/span><b> generative<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use reduces <\/span><b>critical thinking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> en <\/span><b>engagement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, slowly but surely diminishing the value of the human minds after which these systems have been modelled in the first place. It is highly important that students and professionals consider this as our over-reliance on <\/span><b>generative AI<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may lead to the gradual decay of our fundamental cognitive skills, our brain deeming analytical thinking unnecessary when it is underused.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking this significant issue into consideration, human involvement should ideally exist throughout the entire <\/span><b>AI lifecycle:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during <\/span><b>system design<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>model development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>decision-making<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and especially <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after<\/span><\/i> <b>the production of<\/b> <b>AI outputs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All in all, humans should still be able to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">challenge<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">en <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">override<\/span><\/i> <b>AI decisions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>AI Literacy Must Be Context-Specific<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another misconception is that AI literacy can be taught as a <\/span><b>single universal course<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
