The best AI programme in the Netherlands: which one fits your goal?

29 October 2026

"What is the best AI programme in the Netherlands?" The honest answer: it depends on what you want to become and how much time you have. A university master's in AI is something very different from a three-week course. Below we compare the four main routes.

The four routes

Route Length Admission Recognition Cost
University bachelor's or master's in Artificial Intelligence 1 to 3 years, full-time Pre-university or academic degree Accredited bachelor's or master's Tuition fees
Diploma at NLQF Level 6 About a year and a half, part-time No prior education required NLQF Level 6, comparable to bachelor level From €14,995 at Amsterdam Data Academy, VAT-free
Bootcamp 2 to 6 months No prior education required Provider certificate About €4,500 to €8,000
Short course 1 day to a few weeks None Provider certificate A few hundred to about €1,000

Which route fits you?

You want to study AI as a discipline. Choose a university programme in Artificial Intelligence, for example at the University of Amsterdam, Radboud University, the University of Groningen or Utrecht University. You get the most theoretical depth and an accredited degree.

You already work and want a complete programme alongside your job. A diploma at NLQF Level 6 gives you a broad programme and a recognised level, without quitting your job or needing prior education. The Applied AI & Data Science Diploma from Amsterdam Data Academy is the first private AI diploma programme at this level.

You want a data or AI role as fast as possible. Choose a bootcamp. Part-time alongside your job, like our 18-week bootcamps, or full-time at a bootcamp such as Le Wagon or Ironhack.

You mainly want to use AI well in your current job. A short course is enough. For example AI Literacy & Ethics or Working with AI (Copilot).

What to look for in any AI programme

  1. Does it fit your goal? Research and theory, or direct application?
  2. Does it fit your life? Full-time, part-time or self-paced?
  3. What recognition do you get? An accredited degree, an NLQF classification or a certificate.
  4. Do you learn with real projects? Employers look at what you can show.
  5. What does it cost, and who can contribute?

Frequently asked questions

Is a diploma at NLQF Level 6 the same as a bachelor's degree? No. It is comparable to bachelor level, but it is not an accredited bachelor's degree from a university. The NLQF shows the level at which you studied.

Do I need a technical background? No. Many of our participants come from other fields. We start with the fundamentals of data and AI.

What do you earn after an AI programme? It depends on the role and your experience. See our overview of data and AI salaries.
