Dutch alternatives to Coursera: learn AI and data with a teacher
29 October 2026
For many people Coursera is the first place to look when they want to learn AI or data. That makes sense: it has courses from well-known universities and companies, you learn when you want and it is affordable. Still, more and more people in the Netherlands look for an alternative. These are the reasons, and the options.
Why people look for an alternative
- No teacher. You watch videos and take quizzes. Nobody reviews your real work or helps when you get stuck.
- Dropping out. Self-paced online learning takes a lot of discipline. Many people start with enthusiasm and never finish.
- Recognition. A Coursera certificate is well known, but tells a Dutch employer little about your level. It is not classified on the NLQF, the Dutch qualifications framework.
- Funding. Dutch schemes such as UWV or the SLIM subsidy for small and medium businesses work with registered Dutch providers.
- Relevance. Courses are generic. They do not cover your sector, the Dutch job market or the EU AI Act.
- Language. Most content is in English. Teams that prefer Dutch often find that a barrier.

How Amsterdam Data Academy does it differently
We combine the flexibility of online learning with what you miss on Coursera.
- Learn at your own pace, with a fixed live session. You study online and have a live session with a teacher every week, online or at Science Park in Amsterdam.
- A teacher who reviews your work. Every course ends with a final assignment applied to your own work, with feedback.
- English or Dutch. You choose.
- Recognised. We are CRKBO-registered and hold the NRTO quality mark. Our courses and bootcamps count towards the Applied AI & Data Science Diploma, classified at NLQF Level 6, comparable to bachelor level.
- VAT-free and fundable. Because of our CRKBO registration you pay no VAT. We are contracted by UWV, SME employers can apply for SLIM subsidy and you can pay in instalments at no extra cost.

Frequently asked questions
Does a Coursera certificate count towards a Dutch diploma? No. Courses at Amsterdam Data Academy do count towards our diploma at NLQF Level 6.
Is online learning with a teacher more expensive? Yes, a guided course costs more than a subscription. Because we are VAT-free and you can fund it through your employer, UWV or SLIM, the difference is often smaller than you think.
Can international professionals in the Netherlands join? Yes. All our courses and bootcamps are available in English.
