Introducing the AI Strategy Canvas
Inspired by the Business Model Canvas by Osterwalder — tailored for the age of AI. As more and more organizations explore the potential of Artificial Intelligence, one thing becomes clear: AI is not just a technology challenge — it’s a strategic one. Yet many businesses still struggle to bridge the gap between ambition and execution. At Amsterdam Data Academy, we’ve developed a simple yet powerful tool to help teams think and act strategically about AI: the AI Strategy Canvas.Inspired by Osterwalder’s Business Model Canvas
Just like Osterwalder’s canvas helped startups clarify their value proposition and business model on one page, our AI Strategy Canvas does the same for AI transformation. It provides a visual, collaborative framework to explore the what, why, and how of your AI initiatives — across technical, organizational, and ethical dimensions. The Canvas: 9 Building Blocks for AI Strategy
The AI Strategy Canvas consists of 9 blocks, grouped in three zones:- Middle (Core Strategy)
- Right (Stakeholders & Adoption)
- Left (Inputs & Enablers)
Core Strategy (Middle Column)
- Value Proposition: What value does AI create for your organization or for society? Think productivity, personalization, insight, automation, or new services.
- Use Cases: What are the most relevant applications of AI in your context? Map current or planned use cases that drive the value above.
Stakeholders & Change (Right Column)
- Stakeholders: Who benefits from or is affected by your AI strategy? Customers, employees, managers, regulators — each has a different stake.
- Change & Adoption: How will you create buy-in and drive acceptance? Consider communication, training, incentives, pilots, co-creation.
- Impact & KPIs: How will you measure AI success? Define success metrics: efficiency gains, NPS, accuracy, error reduction, etc.
Input & Enablers (Left Column)
- Key Technology: What AI tools, models, and infrastructure do you need? Think cloud, LLMs, ML models, APIs, compute power, automation platforms.
- Key Data: What data sources are required? Are they available and compliant? AI is only as good as the data it learns from.
- Key Resources: What people, skills, or partners are essential? Internal teams, AI champions, external experts, training — all count.
Foundation (Bottom Row)
- Governance & Risk: How do you manage AI safely and ethically? Include policies on fairness, transparency, explainability, GDPR, and the EU AI Act.
When to Use the Canvas

- Strategy workshop with business and IT stakeholders
